It’s Time to Celebrate!

UW Health

Last night, the Go Red Girlfriends Challengers gathered at Hotel Red for a celebratory dinner. One of their major accomplishments over the past 12 weeks? Collectively walking more than 4.5 million steps – 4,619,323 or 2,310 miles to be exact (it’s 2,100 miles to San Francisco)! More than the numbers, the rewards for doing this challenge were far more personal. The common theme? Roxanne put it best when she said, “I’ve learned to love myself as much as others love me.” Our Girlfriends have made the commitment to take care of themselves like they take care of others in their lives. And they recognize that they’ve just begun a life-long journey. If you’d like to hear their stories in person, we invite you to join us at the Go Red For Women Luncheon at Monona Terrace on Thursday, May 17. Email Brittany Lee at the American Heart Association (brittany.lee@heart.org) for information about tickets to this inspiring event.

Letter to Me

Shari

As we near the end of our Go Red journey, we were asked to write a letter to ourselves.  Here is what I wrote to me:

Dear Shari,

Congratulations on embarking on this 12-week challenge!  Being the center of attention usually comes quite naturally to you, but to be THIS MUCH as the center with all the blogging, media interviews, and TV appearances really takes the cake.

Throughout the challenge, you have lost 9 lbs overall, lost 3 inches in your waist, and generally improved your overall health.  But what I am most proud of you for is your commitment to exercise.  Because of the fabulous people at Core Athletic, you have consistently exercised at Core an average of 4 nights a week, including some Saturday mornings.  You’ve had a lot going on in your personal life, and many times, Lydia was sad because her mommy was leaving for exercise class again.  But, you stuck with it and made it a priority – you made YOU a priority.  You now view exercise as a want vs. a need.  Oh, and I’m also proud of you being 32 days of DIET SODA FREE!  Who would have thought the daughter of a Pepsi Man could say that!  Keep up the good work!

Through this process, you’ve learned that it’s a combination of exercise AND healthy eating that’s going to get you to your ultimate weight loss goal.  You can’t have one without the other.  And, you’ve also realized that this is a life long process.  You’re not going to get to your goal weight and just stop.  You can’t afford to let bad habits creep back into your life and ruin all that you’ve worked so hard for.  That being said, it’s ok to have little rewards every now and again – everything in moderation.  Living a life of deprivation just won’t cut it for you.  And, yes, Sue, sometimes that might mean a meal from McDonald’s.  :)

When the challenge is over, you promise to continue your quest to weigh what your driver’s license says you weigh.  You will continue to exercise at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week.  You will also encourage your teammates to join you in a Shari Boot Camp on your driveway in the summer.  We’ve got the moves down, girls.  Let’s show the neighbors what we’re made of.  The challenge may be over – but we’ve still got lots of work to do.

Before I end, I want to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to Kane from Core Athletic for allowing us unlimited access to your facility during this challenge.  I can say with 100% certainty that I would not have done as well with my program without you.  Thank you also to Kim and Ryan for putting up with us on Monday and Wednesday nights (we do like to sing, don’t we?).  And thank you to Ali McWilliams for her awesome Strength Fusion class that kicks my butt each week.  Everyone at Core truly cares about each and every person who comes through their door – and I’m forever grateful for that.

So, that’s it.  You are a BetterU; you are a healthier you.  Congratulations on a job well done.  And, of course, it goes without saying:  Keep on keepin’ on.

Love,

Shari

Letter…

Sue

Last night we had a Go Red celebration dinner, and were each asked to write a letter to ourselves describing the journey.  I wasn’t in a place to share my letter last night, but thought I would share it here.

Dear Sue,

Twelve weeks ago you had no idea how much all of the things you’ve learned would be put to use to help you not only live healthier but to actually survive.  You are a believer that there is no such thing as coincidence.  Everything happens for a reason.  You, Shari, Yolanda, and all of the other girlfriends were chosen for this challenge because you needed it, for whatever reason.  It may have been for something that you saw in yourself, or for something that you never saw coming.

Being a part of this challenge, has saved your life.  If you did not have the weekly commitments to CORE, you would never have met Kane, Kim, Ryan and Ali.  Their support and encouragement has been invaluable.  They, I’m sure, have no idea how much.  You can now continue at CORE, with classes with Ali, and use all of the tools given to you by Kim and Kane to continue to make gains in your physical health.

You have met experts from UW-Health, Vonda and Gail, especially, who have given you information that will help both you and your boys continue on a healthy path.  Vonda’s mantra “Movement Matters” is ingrained in your head, and will forever keep you off the couch.  The other experts have given you tools to destress using meditation, and information on how to keep your heart healthy, which will come in handy over the next years but the next few months especially.

You are currently going through one of the most difficult situations you will hopefully have to deal with for a very long time.  Without the Go Red experience, you would have been in a much different place to handle it.  But, because you were given an opportunity to like yourself again, put yourself back on the list, and realize that you matter, I know that you are forever grateful for all of the people you have met, and the experiences you have had on this journey.

Peace,

Comfortable is Really Good

Kristi

Shoes can be comfortable.  A couch can be, and most of the time is, really comfortable.  When used in that context it’s a very ordinary word.  Today, when I think of “comfortable”, the word is much more meaningful and at times, powerful.

Today, after weeks of increasing my level of activity and exercise, my clothes are more comfortable.  Hooray!  The education we have received and the support I get from my Go Red teammates have made me more confident, comfortable in my own skin as it were.  Again, Hooray!  Eating better can doesn’t have to be painful or flavorless – I’m comfortable with the choices we’ve learned.

When I’m feeling comfortable or content with my life as it is, I smile more, sleep better and I bet I’m easier to get along with.  There have been no fireworks, no major dress size milestones achieved or celebrated.  The Go Red Challenge has been a very comfortable experience, and a  rewarding one.  I believe I will thoroughly enjoy my new “comfortable” life, with the benefits continuing.

5 Is My Lucky Number

Zoe

After our health assessments last Saturday, I’ve taken a few days to process the results. Initially I wasn’t sure if I was happy about my results… but after talking with Vonda Shaw and thinking about everything I realize that I should be proud and feel good about my results.

Keep in mind, that our initial assessment was on 1/21/12. We had our program kick-off meeting on 2/15/12. To be honest, I didn’t do much in those 3 weeks between. So in about 10 weeks I have managed to lose 5 pounds and 5 inches around my waist. Like I’ve mentioned in the past, I have been frustrated about my scale not moving much despite all of my hard work. Initially, I wasn’t very happy to see that I’d only lost 5 pounds. Once I thought about my results, I realized that if I keep doing what I’m doing and I lose only a pound for every inch then I’m ok with that. Hopefully these results mean that I’ve become more toned and stronger and ideally the rest will follow. This is a great reminder that the number on the scale isn’t the only way we should measure success and/or health.

My cholesterol, BMI, Diabetes Glucose, Blood Pressure and a Fitness test were also measured on Saturday. Oddly my cholesterol and triglycerides increased slightly. I was told that they’re both still under the target numbers, so I shouldn’t worry. But I don’t know what could have caused the increase. My BMI and blood pressure decreased slightly and my diabetes glucose decreased by 10. The fitness test (I think that’s what it’s called) involved us walking on a treadmill while Vonda increased the speed and incline while measuring our heart rate and blood pressure a few times. The results were that I improved by 1 fitness level.

Overall these seem like a good start for the life change I am making. It’s too bad this challenge is almost over, it sure would be nice to have an assessment once every 3 months! Even though our measurements have been recorded, plan to see a little less of me at the luncheon. I’m still working hard every day. :)

A BetterMe!

Roxanne

Hi everyone! I went away for awhile but I’m back now. If I were to write everything that has happened in my journey in one post, I’m sure I would exceed the number of words allowed!

I’ve come a long way over the course of our challenge to date. I’ve learned a lot and have made some serious changes internally. One of the biggest internal changes has been in my thinking – thinking about my activity, my food intake, but most importantly how I think about myself.

One of my big “A-ha” moments happened the night that our team participated in a photo shoot for Brava magazine. We decided to go out after our shoot and spend a little time together. While we were talking, my teammate Kristi told me how during the challenge, she had learned how to like herself. Instead of being upset with not being everything our society tells us is ‘model perfect’, she has decided she is who she is and that’s a wonderful person to be! I don’t often find myself speechless, but her comment rang so true for a lesson I needed to learn, that I just smiled real big and knew that from that point on, I was going to be much happier with “me”. How simple it seems yet how difficult it is.

That’s what being a great team is all about. We share with each other, learn from each other, and most importantly care about each other. I’m so excited about how this experience is making me a BetterMe!

Carry on…

Sue

So, this morning was our 2nd wellness check-in.  I wish that I could say I’m ecstatic about the results, but that’s not really the case.  Some of my numbers went up (triglycerides??) and some went down (waist, 3 inches gone!) and some stayed the same.  At first I was a bit disappointed because it felt like over the past eight weeks I have made many positive changes with regards to exercise and nutrition.  Vonda Shaw, who did our wellness check today, was supportive and yet realistic during our discussion .  She was supportive in the sense that she celebrated with me the fact that I have made some gains…my exercise routine, changing some eating habits and taking time for myself, being a few of them.  And, she was realistic, sharing with me that sometimes there are other factors at play with these numbers, such as heredity.  As you may recall, I was adopted, so I have no family history to look back on, which makes this a little more challenging.  It makes me want to work extra hard over the next few months to see if I can get those numbers to move it, move it!!

As a whole, our team has really come together and supported each other, not only with this challenge, but with life!!  That has been a blessing :)  I am so thankful to be able to talk openly and candidly with Shari and Yolanda, and have them understand exactly what I’m talking about, both with the successes and the frustrations.  There have been times when I really had to work to make arrangements with everything and everyone in my life so that I could go exercise, and it would have been much easier to just not go, but I knew that they were at the gym waiting for me…and of course, when I got there I was SO grateful that I had gone! One insight I’ve learned through this experience is that each day is different, and it’s imperative that I just take one day at a time.  Often I can get discouraged because it seems like so much to juggle to try to be healthy, and it is overwhelming.  It helps to have some amazing friends who check in with me regularly about how this challenge is going, what I’ve learned, and who are happily available to be walking buddies…they’ll even take on the hill!!

We have four weeks remaining on the challenge (technically), so I’m going to make the most of our resources with the time we have left!  My one tough spot right now is the nutrition/food part.  It’s the one part that I feel like I need more guidance, and maybe accountability.  I was recording my food and exercise each day on a separate blog, (for myself, mainly) but have now switched to a website that Gail Underbakke shared with us.  It’s www.myfitnesspal.com which is a free diet and exercise online journal.  I have found it to be very useful.  When you sign up, it asks you for all of your physical numbers, such as height, weight etc.  It then sets up a plan for you in each area, including;  calorie count, fat, carbohydrates and protein numbers for the day, specifically for you and your goal.  All I do each day is input my food items, and IT figures out how much of each area I have left for the day.  It’s pretty slick, and it holds me accountable…no more eating something without knowing exactly how many grams of fat, carbs and calories I’m getting/using.  The database is amazing…so far, it’s had every food that I have put in, whether it be a store brand item or menu items from restaurants.  No more trying to figure that out on my own.  I’m going to try this for a while to help me better track my actual intake!

We have a couple of fun events coming up.  One is our celebration dinner together as a big group.  It will be fun to get together with the other girlfriends and experts to share our successes and also what we’re still working on.  We will also be sharing a letter that we have each written to our “former self” ( so many things to say…) Then, on Thursday, May 17th we’ll be celebrating again at the AHA luncheon.  Tickets are available if you’d like to join in on the fun!  There is a silent auction, lunch and guest speakers with the proceeds going to the American Heart Association.  You can find more information here: Go Red for Women 2012 Luncheon

Hoping for Changes

Zoe

Tomorrow morning is our wellness screening. If you remember, at the very beginning of the challenge each Go Red lady went to UW Health and had our blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate, BMI, weight, measurements and a few other factors recorded.

I’ll admit it — I’m freaking out a bit. I really really really want to see some RESULTS tomorrow! I’m worried that if I don’t I’ll feel like I’ve failed this challenge. So just in case, I thought I should remind myself of some of the less measurable/smaller changes that I’ve noticed in myself throughout this challenge.

1. My clothes are fitting looser. Anyone who knows me, knows I don’t need an excuse to go shopping — but I sure love using this excuse for a little retail therapy! :)

2. I’m seeing a lot of progress at CORE. When we first started working out there, I was lifting ~40 pounds during our warm up exercises. Now I can comfortably life 50-60 pounds. But the biggest change that I’ve noticed from working with Kane & Kim at CORE Athletic is that in the beginning they would tell me things like “You should be feeling this in your core” or “Squeeze your gluteus” or “pinch your shoulder blades together” while doing certain exercises. In the beginning I had a hard time figuring out how to focus in on certain areas of my body. I thought, what do you mean my “core”?!?! or I wasn’t sure if I was actually squeezing my gluteus. I knew the general area I was working, but I didn’t know how to focus on it. Now I feel like I can really feel what part of my body each exercise is targeting. I’m not sure if this makes any sense… but either way I’m feeling more aware of my muscles, movements and how my body feels. And my body feels pretty darn good!  Thanks CORE!!

3. I have more energy. Just try to keep up with me! I’m juggling more than ever — workouts, two jobs, errands, Go Red obligations, I’m taking a class, having a social life, etc. And I still have time to have fun and relax when I need to!

4. I’m feeling more positive. One of my goals at the beginning of the journey was to figure out how to make myself feel better both physically and emotionally. Done and done. I know that both of these goals will never be fully satisfied. I believe that there is always room for improvement in terms of physical and emotional health. But I feel that I’m on the right track — and I’m not getting off of it!

So, if tomorrow morning I find out that I haven’t improved my waist measurements, weight, BMI or other factors — I’ll be honest — I’m going to be super bummed. But then I’m going to re-read this post and try to think of a few other positive changes that I’ve noticed over the past several weeks. And I’m gonna keep working my butt off (hopefully literally)!

I’m sure many people can relate to how I’m feeling. Here’s some words of wisdom to keep us all motivated:

Success is not a race, be patient.
Success leads to success.
Success is always a work in progress.
Success doesn’t come to you–you go to it
.

Success is a journey, not a destination. Focus on the process.
Some people dream about success… while others wake up and work hard at it.
Success is achieved and maintained by those who try-and keep trying.
Everyday is a good day to SUCCEED!
If at first you don’t succeed-try, try again

I can do this…I know I can. It’s just going to take time & patience.

Start doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible, and suddenly you’ll be doing the impossible!

“Everyone faces defeat. It may be a stepping-stone or a stumbling block, depending on the mental attitude with which it is faced.” ~Napoleon Hill

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” ~Zig Ziglar

Can I hear those Numbers Falling?

Kristi

Tomorrow morning is time to see how my body has reacted to this work and change in my nutrition.  It is the day we have our second screening with UW Health.   I am not expecting a miracle, but I sure would like to be rewarded with some improved numbers.

I think I’m just a little worried that there may be hereditary things that have started to work against me.  If that’s the case, it will be my job to just work through any additional changes that may be needed.  That’s what this is about – one step at a time, right?

I’m wishing all my friends and fellow challengers the best – that you each see improvement in your numbers.  If I’m lucky, maybe I will too!
