Maria’s Blog
Like many Latina women, 37 year old Maria Torres puts her family first, but in the process, she often forgets about herself.
The busy yet organized mother of seven boys, one born with a congenital heart defect, has her own family history of heart disease, too. Her father died due to heart problems at the age of 50 and she also has a long list of family members that battle diabetes. Maria has taken a strong stance to take inventory of her own life because she knows how quickly it could all one day disappear.
“The realization that the type of sedentary, unhealthy lifestyle I am leading could someday take me out of my family’s lives forever, like my father, scares me more than anything,” she says.
Maria wants to eat and cook healthier for her family, stress less and even find time to incorporate exercise into her full schedule so she can be more active with her family. But her role as a supportive wife and mother will still take precedence.
“I Go Red for me, my family and the Latino community.”
